3 dead in California plane crash

Three people were killed and two injured Monday when a small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in Riverside, California, said the city's Fire Chief Michael Moore.

Previously, it was said that four people had died when the plane crashed near Riverside Municipal Airport. After further investigation, Moore announced late Monday in a news conference that the death toll was now three.

A Cessna 310 crashed about a half-mile northeast of the Riverside Municipal Airport, according to Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman. It had departed from Riverside en route to San Jose.

The plane had five people on board, and split apart when it hit two Riverside homes, Moore said.
There were no victims on the ground or inside the homes, the fire chief said. But he added that they would do a secondary check Tuesday morning.

Of the five people on the plane, three had died and two were injured, the fire chief said.
One of the passengers was taken to the Riverside Community Hospital and another to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, Moore said. Both are women, he said, correcting previous information that one of the survivors had been a teenager.

Earlier in the evening, Moore had said that they believed one of the victims had been a resident. In a later press conference, he said it appeared that the people on the plane "were injected into the house" when the plane hit.

Moore said the pilot did not appear to be among the survivors.
The National Transportation Safety Board will continue their investigation in the morning, Moore said.

Officials are on the scene of a possible small plane crash in Riverside, California.

The people on the plane had been in Southern California for a cheerleading competition at Disneyland, and were heading back to San Jose.

"It's horrible, coupled together that they were going to a cheer competition," Moore said. "This is supposedly a happy time and then just to have a tragic incident like this, and into one of these Riverside residences, it's really a sad case for us."

Investigation pending

The block was evacuated, sending residents from about 20 homes to a shelter.
The aircraft had a full tank of fuel, causing the fire to continue burning. Investigators also want to assess the neighborhood in case of dropped plane parts, as debris scattered in the impact.

Lt. Charles Payne of the Riverside City Police Department said the crash occurred around 4:41 p.m. PT (7:41 p.m. ET) on Central and Streeter avenues.Traci Zamora who lives in the neighborhood, heard the crash.

"I was inside the house and it shook our whole house like an earthquake," she told CNN over Facebook. "It is all so surreal."
She said her family had seen an older man and a younger family who lived in the the two affected houses.

Another resident, Chloe Hirohata told CNN in an email, "I heard an explosion, witnessed a large plume of smoke coming from the scene and rushed over."

President Obama ridiculed on Snapchat by daughter Sasha

President Barack Obama has disclosed that his youngest daughter recently mocked him on Snapchat.

The US leader said Sasha had recorded him discussing the social network at a family dinner and then quietly posted to get reaction to her friends.

It is not the first time the president has discussed his 15-year-old's online activities.

In July, he said she also tweets, leading several media outlets to try to identify her account.
It remains secret.

Likewise a copy of the described Snapchat post has not been made public. Messages posted to the app are designed to disappear after being viewed or within a short period of time, but there are ways to circumvent the restrictions.

President Obama made a surprise appearance on
Jimmy Kimmel's chat show earlier this week

"Sasha gave me instructions on Snapchat," he said.

"One night at dinner we're sitting there, and I had read that Snapchat was becoming really popular among her age group. So, I said: 'So, tell me about Snapchat.'

"So, she starts explaining stuff - you can make little
faces on your picture, and this and that and the other.

"And at the end of it, Michelle and I are sitting there. And I said: 'Isn't this interesting?'

"And I started talking to Michelle about the implications of social media and what all this means.

"Only to find out she was recording us the whole time, and then sent to her friends afterwards: 'This is my dad lecturing us on the meaning of social media.'

"And she took a picture of herself sort of looking
bored."

The president added that his wife - who joined Snapchat in June - and his eldest daughter Malia had "loved" the post.
The show's host, Jimmy Kimmel, joked that the event represented a security breach.

Email leaks

The president also mentioned that his own iPhone was limited to receiving emails and browsing the internet, and would not take photos, play music or make calls.

"My rule has been throughout my presidency, that I assume that someday, some time, somebody will read this email," he said.

"So, I don't send any email that at some point won't be on the front page of the newspapers."
Many of the features of the President's iphone are blocked

Hillary Clinton, who is campaigning to be the next commander-in-chief - has been beset by a scandal over leaked emails, while her rival Donald Trump has been accused of using outdated software on his company's email servers.

President Obama also said that he expected technology to preoccupy his successor.

"One of the biggest challenges are,how do we continue to get all the benefits of being in cyberspace
but protect our finances, protect our privacy?

"How do we balance issues of security? Because people expect the government to monitor this enough to protect them from bad guys.

"This is going to be a big debate that we're going to have for a long time."

Prince autopsy planned for today

As stunned fans mourned legendary singer Prince, questions remained on what killed him days after he performed in Atlanta to rave reviews.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. An autopsy will be conducted Friday, starting at 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET).

Prince Rogers Nelson, 57, died Thursday after he was found unresponsive in an elevator at his studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Paramedics tried to perform CPR but were unable to revive him, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m., less than 30 minutes after sheriff's deputies responded to a medical call at the scene.

The Purple Rain singer was found dead in the recording studios of his Paisley Park estate today, police confirmed.

No details surrounding the cause of his death have yet been released.

Prince's home in Minneapolis is as extravagant and outlandish as you might expect, with the floor in the entrance hall embellished with the unpronounceable sign synonymous with the music legend.

Carver County Chief Deputy Jason Kamerud said police responded to a medical call at 9.43am and the crime lab and medical examiner are on scene.

The 57-year-old, who was found dead at home this morning , was forced to cancel two gigs recently over concerns about his health.

And last Friday the Purple Rain singer was flying home from a show in Atlanta, Georgia when he was taken ill forcing his private jet to make an emergency landing in Molina, Illinois.

He was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where he was treated and released hours later.

Prince, an intensely private person, sold more than 100 million records during his career, won seven Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

In 2007, he played the Super Bowl in one of the most celebrated of such performances.

In 1993, Prince legally changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, but later changed it back again.

He was born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958, and is said to have written his first song at the age of 7.

14 dead after overpass collapses in India

An overpass collapsed near the Indian city of Kolkata, killing 14 people and leaving dozens missing, authorities said.

More than 100 people were reported missing after the incident Thursday, which occurred in a busy commercial area north of the city, said Sgt. Saurav Benerjee of Kolkata police.

However, authorities stressed that just because some have been reported missing doesn't mean they're trapped -- it just means they're unaccounted for.

The collapse occurred at around midday, which would have been a busy time in the area.
Since the collapse, 62 people have been pulled out of the rubble, according to Maj. Gen. Anurag Gupta with India's National Disaster Management Authority. It's not clear if those were among the 100-plus people unaccounted for mentioned by Benerjee.

The incident occurred in Girish Park, a crowded neighborhood with many wholesale markets.

Slabs from the flyover, which has been under construction for five years, fell on moving vehicles, Benerjee said.

Some people are feared trapped in their cars while construction workers may be buried under the debris.

Deadly construction accidents are tragically common in India and the rest of South Asia.

A building collapse in Pakistan killed 23 people in November, and nine died when a residential building fell in India in July of last year.

In neighboring Bangladesh, more than 1,000 people were killed when a poorly constructed garment factory caved in almost three years ago.

Missing American siblings confirmed dead in the Brussels terror attack

The heartbreaking news ended a desperate search that started the moment their cell call from the airport to their mom in Holland sounded like it “went underwater” and then went dead, James Cain, whose daughter Cameron was engaged to Alexander, told the Daily News.

“It’s agonizing beyond any parent’s worst nightmare,” said Cain, a former U.S. ambassador to Denmark.

“They had no other children,” Cain said of parents Edmond and Marjan. “They are strong Dutch fiber, but you can only imagine how devastating this is for them.”

Cain said that the Belgian authorities met with the families of missing people and shared the names of the remaining survivors late Thursday.

Brussels hit by explosions at Zaventem airport and metro station

As many as 23 reported dead after blasts at Zaventem airport and at metro station near European Union buildings in Belgian capital

Brussels has been rocked by explosions at an airport and metro station, with reports of multiple casualties.

Two explosions struck Zaventem airport and a separate blast hit a metro station near European Union buildings in the Belgian capital shortly after.

Belgian media reported that as many as 13 people were killed at the airport, with 35 injured, and 10 killed at the metro station. These tolls have not been confirmed by police.

The Belgian state broadcaster said the airport explosions were caused by a suicide attack. All flights were cancelled, arriving planes were being diverted and Belgium’s terror alert was raised to its maximum level. Security was also tightened at all Paris airports.
The explosions took place in the departure hall at about 8am local time. TV pictures showed people fleeing the terminal, while smoke billowed from the roof of the airport. A false ceiling collapsed, causing lots of dust and smoke. The airport has been closed and people advised not to travel to the area.

One witness, Gil Durand, told Le Soir that the first explosion occurred in the departure lounge, followed by another a few seconds later. “The ambulances arrived slowly, people were evacuated, there was a lot of smoke,” she said. She added that many of the injured were wearing the uniforms of Brussels airport and Brussels Airlines.

Controls have been stepped up at Charleroi airport, about 46km to the south of Brussels.

Rescue workers set up a makeshift treatment centre in a local pub near the entrance to the Maelbeek metro station, not far from the headquarters of the European Union.

Dazed and shocked commuters streamed from the metro entrances as police tried to set up a security cordon.
“The metro was leaving Maelbeek station when there was a really loud explosion,” Alexandre Brans, 32, told AP, wiping blood from his face. “It was panic everywhere. There were a lot of people in the metro.”
There has been no official confirmation that Tuesday’s blasts were a terrorist attack.

They occurred four days after the arrest in Brussels of Salah Abdeslam, the prime suspect in the November terrorist attacks on Paris that killed 130 people. Belgian police had been on alert for any reprisal action.

East African Community admits South Sudan, Rejects Burundi’s Chairmanship Bid

The East African Community (EAC) has rejected Burundi’s bid to chair the east Africa bloc for 2016. South Sudan however is the newest addition to the EAC.

As leaders of the EAC met in Arusha in northern Tanzania, one man was conspicuously missing. Burundi's president, Pierre Nkurunziza, did not attend even though his country was bidding for the chairmanship of the bloc.

The last time Nkurunziza attended an EAC summit, rebels staged a failed coup in his absence. The group, however, rejected Burundi's bid for this yearly chairmanship.

The tenure of Tanzania's President John Magufuli was extended into a second year.

South Sudan is the newest addition to a group, which was previously made up of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. South Sudan gained its independence from the Republic of Sudan in mid-2011.

However, only two years later a political split threw the country back into a civil war. Leaders from nearly all EAC countries have played a role in the peace talks between South Sudan's president Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar.

The two rival parties have now agreed upon a transitional government, which is still waiting to come into force.

"South Sudan's membership of EAC is not strictly on economic benefits but has historical significance. EAC is where we belong," South Sudan's vice president James Wani Igga proclaimed. He said his country had wanted to be part of East Africa even before its independence.
